Season Three, The sailing seamstress, episode #1

Updated: Jun 28, 2022

Sailboat spaces can be challenging. Not only do these spaces require embracing a minimalist lifestyle but often common conveniences are elusive, consider the simple concept of privacy. Little on a sailboat is usual and customary and curtain options are no exception. Windows or portlights are irregular in shape and often curved, portlight frames don’t lend themselves to traditional curtain styles. If you desire privacy but also want a curtain that is both beautiful and functional there is no choice but to be innovative.

I spent hours searching for curtain ideas, intent on locating the perfect solution. In the end my hours of digging and research led to this innovative solution, and I couldn’t be happier with the product. I sewed my own portlight curtains and attached them directly to the frame in a rather smart way, if I do say so myself…and I do. They Snap-On, Snap-Off!

Items you will need: Sewing Machine, Template Material, Masking Tape, Seamstick Tape, Marker, Snap Hardware. Choose your favorite fabric, I lined mine in white canvas and I inserted insulation bubble foil into my curtain. The bubble foil insert (recycled auto-shade) adds rigidity and provides an additional insulation quality.

This solution was my own brainchild and it worked excellently for our portlight frames - which measure 7/8". If you are interested in a kit with simple instructions reach out, I am happy to share, I can create a kit that caters to your needs, or I can send you the parts list and you can purchase the hardware separately. #paypal, #sailrite
