Repurpose: adapt for use in a different purpose.
I have always been interested in reclaiming, repurposing, and restoring. This passion is evident in many of my endeavors; I live in a 140+ year historic home which is one huge restoration, I enjoy retrieving items from dumpster diving that have potential, I love vintage items that benefit from a little love, and turning something old into new. Old sails are perfect for this creative expression. When a sail can no longer function in its original purpose it can be given a new life.
While sewing replacement items for the boat; sail cover, companion way covers, and other items I noticed that sail cloth (dacron) was used to line some of the items. Instead of purchasing new Dacron by the yard I reached out to my sailing friends. Have an old sail? Donate it and I will make you an item, the rest I can repurpose for my own purposes. So far I have three donated sails and I have created three roll top laundry bags. It is a little time consuming but patterning, saving materials, and hardware has turned into a new sewing passion.
